Piedmont Athletic Club

Program FAQ's

What should I expect at practice?

Fernhill Park offers not just a six-lane track along 42nd Ave, but flat grassy fields, running paths, and rolling hills - the perfect combination for Track & Field and Cross Country training.

We begin each session with an athletic warm-up, tailor each practice to improve endurance, strength, speed, and skill, and complete each day with a cool down, stretch, and team cheer.

Will we practice in the rain?

You bet! As an outdoor sport, we want to be prepared for sun and rain, dry dirt and mud, clear skies and overcast. However, in the event of severe weather, such as thunderstorms, extreme heat or cold, or smoke from forest fires, we may suspend, postpone, delay, or cancel practice for safety reasons.

What if this is my first time running, throwing, or jumping?

Piedmont Athletic Club is about providing opportunities to participate, learn, and compete. We all had to start at the beginning, so you've come to the right place!

What if my child is looking for something more advanced?

All athletes that join us will receive training that matches their ability and skill level.

Should I run outside of practice?

Absolutely! Run. Jump. Play. Be a kid! If you are interested in more advanced training, talk to us about additional training options, like weekly training plans, weekend workouts, and more.

What should I bring to practice ?

All athletes are encouraged to bring a kit bag to all practices and competitions. This bag should include:

        Running Shoes
        Shorts, Socks, Tshirt
        Athletic Layers/Sweats
        Water Bottle
        Nutritious Snack
        Towel
        Comfortable Change of Clothes

Should I bring anything special to races? Are there uniforms?
What about spikes?

We will have team-issue, Piedmont Athletic Club track tops for everyone! Complete the kit with red shorts (see photos for reference).

Spikes are not always necessary for our youngest runners, but advanced athletes may wish to purchase track spikes for a racing advantage. Talk with your coaches about finding the best shoes for your age, ability, and preferred event.

What events do you focus on? What is Piedmont Athletic Club's event specialty?

We are comfortable coaching all youth track & field and cross country events from 100m to 3000m and beyond, plus Long Jump and Turbo Javelin. If your child is interested in learning Shot Put or Discus, let us know before you register. Unfortunately, at this time, we are not equipped for hurdles, high jump, or pole vault.

How does Piedmont Athletic Club compare to other Track & Field and Cross Country options in Portland?

We pride ourselves on giving young athletes opportunities to enjoy this sport while developing their skills. Whether your child is experienced or brand new, we aim to coach them where they are, with a firm eye toward taking the next step when ready.

We do not participate in high performance meets like Junior Olympics or regularly travel to meets that take long days or weekends to complete. We still take training and racing seriously and enjoy coaching athletes of all levels. We prefer smaller local meets with fun, challenging atmospheres. There are a number of local competitions in which our athletes can compete with their peers and excel.
